Yes. Saily gives you the mobile data connection, and a VPN app like NordVPN runs on top of it, as it would on any network. Saily’s own Turkey guide even tells travellers to keep a VPN installed. Just turn the VPN off while you install the eSIM or pay.
The catch: Saily advises turning VPNs off during eSIM installation and payment, or those steps can fail.
Saily and NordVPN come from the same company, Nord Security. They’re separate apps with separate jobs: Saily is the eSIM that gets you online abroad, and NordVPN is the app that protects the traffic going over that connection.
How Saily and NordVPN fit together
- Saily is a prepaid data eSIM. It connects your phone to a partner mobile network in your destination.
- NordVPN works over whatever connection your phone has, including Saily data.
- All your data counts. Saily counts all traffic that passes through its network, so VPN traffic comes out of your Saily plan like anything else.
How to set them up
- Install the Saily app and buy a plan for your destination.
- With your VPN switched off, install the eSIM from the Saily app on Wi-Fi.
- Turn on data roaming for the Saily line.
- When you arrive, the plan activates. Then connect NordVPN as usual.
When to turn the VPN off
Saily’s help centre names two moments:
Disable any VPN services and retry the installation. If it still fails, restart your phone and try again.
Disable VPNs or proxies while you pay. An IP address from a different country than your card can cause a decline.
A real example: Turkey
Saily warns that its app and website may not load inside Turkey because of local restrictions. Its fix is a VPN: connect to a country other than the one you’re in, then try the Saily app again. Saily recommends keeping a VPN installed before you travel to Turkey. That’s a good sign the two work side by side. See our Saily Turkey review.
Saily’s virtual locations vs NordVPN
The Saily app has its own virtual locations feature. It re-routes your traffic through a remote server so it looks as if you’re connecting from another country. Saily presents it as a privacy feature next to its ad blocker and web protection. If you only want those basics on your trip, the Saily app may cover them. If you already use NordVPN on your other devices, keep using it.
Saily’s help centre doesn’t cover running virtual locations and NordVPN at the same time. If something misbehaves, use one at a time.
